Roy Percy
Double Bassist Roy Percy,
although the baby of the band, has been a professional musician for over
twenty years. He has appeared in bands ranging in style from the New Orleans
tradition to Swing, Big Band and Jump-Jive.
As well as touring UK and
European Festivals, Roy has been a frequent transatlantic visitor appearing
at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, L.A.’s Sweet and Hot Festival, and Canada’s
Victoria Jazz Festival.
Nearer home, he has backed
many visiting American jazz musicians at the Edinburgh International Jazz
Festival including Duke Heitger, Evan Christopher and Marty Grosz, and has a
long association with the extraordinary Australian jazz violinist George
Washingmachine. In recent years Roy has been touring as part of a trio with
the guitarist Nigel Clark and the fabulous Grappelli-inspired Dutch
violinist Tim Kliphuis.
As well as jazz, Roy can also
be found playing in Scottish Country Dance bands, Rock-a-Billy bands, and as
part of a group specialising in 19th and early 20th Century Italian love
songs.
His specialty is the rarely
heard ‘slap’ technique, but says that his main criteria in any performance
is to “Keep things swinging and drive the rhythm along”.
In addition to Quattro
MacJazz, Roy features with The Tim Kliphuis Trio, Ken Mathieson’s Classic
Jazz Orchestra,
Swing 2008, The Dick Lee
Septet and the Ritz Trio |
